There’s an extra buzz of excitement this season for Baruch Entertainers, one of Cape Town’s iconic Minstrels troupes, as they prepare to launch both a brand-new uniform for the 2025 Cape Town Street Parade and Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA) competitions.
This exciting reveal will take place at a lively Summer Party event on Saturday November 30, at the Matroosfontein Civic Centre. This gathering promises to bring the community together and celebrate a rich cultural heritage.
But the event isn’t just about the music and the revelry; it’s a heartfelt fundraising effort to ensure that every member of Baruch Entertainers can participate proudly in their new attire without financial barriers.
For Baruch Entertainers, who are based in Mitchell’s Plain, the uniform is more than just a costume. It’s a symbol of unity, heritage, and pride. Yet, with the rising costs of materials and the intricate details that make each uniform uniquely “Baruch,” the troupe faces a significant financial challenge.
Chairman Claude Jonas explains, “Our aim is to make these uniforms accessible for everyone, especially those who might struggle with the cost. The economy has made it harder to produce these outfits, but we are determined to make sure no one is left out from celebrating our culture.”
To achieve this, Baruch Entertainers are inviting the community to support their efforts through ticket sales, donations, and sponsorships. Tickets for the event are R100 and will go towards covering the cost of the troupe’s signature satin and sequined uniforms, ensuring that every member can step out with pride and style at the next parade.
Adding to the evening’s excitement, Baruch Entertainers will debut their new Theme Song, a powerful anthem crafted by Cape Flats musical icons Taurik Blignaut, Choral Maestro Monwabisi Mbambani, and DJ Neeno, with top-notch musicians Laeeq Stewart, Brett-Marvin Edwards, and Jonathan Linnen bringing it to life. With deep roots in Minstrels’ musical tradition and a fresh, creative flair, the song promises to energize the troupe and captivate audiences alike.
“The song is a blend of our culture, creativity, and that unorthodox flair that makes the Minstrels so special,” Jonas adds. “It’s been produced by Taurik Blignaut, who truly understands our tradition, and we’ve kept a few surprises. The full experience of the song will be unveiled for the first time at the Summer Party—it’s going to be memorable.”
The Baruch Entertainers troupe provides a safe space for young people to learn, perform, and develop skills, fostering a sense of community that transcends the stage.
“Our troupe offers a haven against some of the hardships in society, and it gives young people a way to connect with and be proud of their heritage,” Jonas said.
The Minstrels’ influence is steadily growing, especially among young people, who are drawn to the evolving creativity and competitive spirit of the culture.
“The music, rhythm, and competition bring in the younger generations, and each year, more young people want to get involved. It’s truly inspiring,” Jonas observed.
Baruch Entertainers invites everyone to join them at the Matroosfontein Civic Centre on November 30, to enjoy a vibrant evening of music, dance, and community spirit. Can’t make it in person? You can still support the troupe by donating towards the uniform fund, sponsoring, or following them on social media. Every bit of support helps keep this tradition thriving and ensures that every child who dreams of parading in the Minstrels can do so without limitations.
Whether through attending, donating, or simply spreading the word, community members can make a difference in helping Baruch Entertainers continue their legacy.
“Every little bit goes a long way in bringing joy and pride to kids who long to celebrate our culture. It’s about seeing their faces light up as they walk out in uniform, knowing they’re part of something special,” Jonas shared with pride.
