Dutch jazz violinist Tim Kliphuis is bringing his Tim Kliphuis Trio to Cape Town to give a concert with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) on Friday September 27 at the Cape Town City Hall, at 8pm.
They will launch their CD at the same time and copies will be on sale at the concert.
The CPO collaboration will begin with Sheba’s Tiger, a Kliphuis combination of classical and jazz music, and a crossover piece which acts as a short introduction to the rest of the programme.
This will be followed by a Kliphuis’s arrangement of a Bach/Brandenburg suite; then his Violin Concerto, Ulysses, commissioned by the Omsk Philharmonic in Russia in 2016, and recorded last year with the CPO. This concerto, says Kliphuis, “turns the orchestra into a band and we have to play in a way that grooves and swings,without a conductor, in a very chamber music way.”
The concerto has influences of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, blues, Brazilian folk music and all along the way a conversation between orchestra and fiddler.
The band will also play Duke Ellington’s Caravan, arranged by Kliphuis.
