Paul Slabolepszy’s hit South African play, Fordsburg’s Finest, opens at Pieter Toerien’s Theatre On The Bay tomorrow, Friday August 19.
The play follows the return of Thandi (Chi Mhende) from an American exile to South Africa. She finds the site of the house where she was born. It is now a rundown used car sales lot owned and occupied by a Afrikaner ex-policeman (Slabolepszy) whose son died in the Border War, whose wife left him, and who has learnt to hide his pain behind the mask of a used car salesman.
Directed by Bobby Heaney, the play provides the situation for heartfelt self-discovery, an exploration of the tensions existing in the new South African condition, and ultimately leads to a kind of reconciliation.
Fordsburg’s Finest runs at Theatre On The Bay until Saturday September 10. Tickets cost from R180 to R240. Book through Computicket.
