Cape Town has been named the Best City in the World for 2025 by readers of The Telegraph, marking the seventh consecutive year it has received the title.
The announcement was made following the 2025 Telegraph Travel Awards (“Cape Town crowned best city in the world at 2025 Telegraph Travel Awards,” Atlantic Sun).
While many visitors head straight for Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront, Capetonians say the city’s real appeal lies in the lesser-known places scattered across the metro.
To help visitors discover more than the obvious, here are a few of Capetonians’ favourite off-the-beaten-path spots - from quiet coves to indie cinemas and unexpected city trails:
Hike Lion’s Head at Dawn: Skip the Table Mountain cable car crowds and tackle Lion’s Head at sunrise for panoramic views and golden light. Take a flask of coffee and go on full moon nights for a magical city glow.
Snorkel With Seals in Hout Bay: Cape Town’s wild side includes playful Cape fur seals - join a local snorkel boat for an open-water encounter.
Beta Beach, Bakoven: A tiny cove near Camps Bay where locals sneak off for quiet swims and sundowners. Parking is limited, so make use of an e-hailing service.
Oranjezicht City Farm Market: A weekend ritual for organic veggies, breakfast rolls, and Atlantic views just past the Waterfront buzz. Arrive early and bring a tote for fresh local finds.
Hidden Gin Bars: Some of Cape Town’s best bars are hidden behind ordinary doors.
Sea Point Promenade Art Walk: Stroll or cycle along the promenade and spot sculptures and murals tucked between joggers and dog walkers. Keep an eye out for dolphins at sunset.
Constantia’s secret wine farms: Swap Stellenbosch for Constantia’s smaller estates - historic farms, picnic baskets under old oaks, and more laid-back tastings.
Cape Town’s biggest draw isn’t just its world-famous landmarks; it’s the sense of discovery around every corner. That’s what makes the city unforgettable.
So, if you’re planning a visit to the world’s best city, go beyond the guidebook. Chances are your best memories will come from the places you find by accident.
