Two Oceans staff and officials from the City of Cape Town came together on Saturday to clean Mouille Point beach.
Phumza Jongihlathi, the Two Oceans Aquarium’s marketing coordinator, is in charge of the project.
She says it started as a lunchtime beach project, but now they have scheduled three more clean ups at Mouille Point and one at Monwabisi.
“We collected 58.68kg of rubbish. 87 people attended and we were very honoured that the Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis was also there to support and help clean the beach,” said Ms Jongihlathi.
Mr Hill-Lewis said that it was a pleasure to join the teams at the beach.
“I’m grateful to the Two Oceans Aquarium staff and the Ocean Race teams and all the Capetonians that came out to join us at the beach. We are stopping plastic and all sorts of rubbish from going into our ocean that destroy our natural environment,” he said.
