Sea Point police have confirmed that an inquest has been opened after the body of a man was found off Three Anchor Bay last week.
Police suspect the 47-year-old man had allegedly been involved in Abalone poaching because he had been found with an oxygen tank and diving gear after an extensive search by SAPS.
Station commander Colonel Maehlo Lento, said the man’s body had been found after he went missing on Tuesday January 30. However, according to Colonel Lento, the man hadn’t been reported missing until late on Wednesday morning. He said a search commenced later that day and the body was found on Thursday afternoon. “An inquest was opened.
The details of the autopsy are expected in a few days,” said Colonel Lento.
He added that the man’s family had been informed and on the scene on Thursday February 1.
Police did not reveal the man’s identity.
