Cape Town police confirmed that the body of a woman was found on Table Mountain on Tuesday afternoon, near Platteklip Gorge.
Captain Ezra October, spokesperson for the Cape Town Central police station, said forensic investigators had been on the scene on Tuesday and would be gathering information over the next few days.
He said they had not been able to identify the body yet.
It is still unclear whether this discovery was linked to Charlotte Nikoi, who went missing more than two months ago, on Human Rights Day – March 21 – near the same area.
Ms Nikoi, a Unicef director, had gone hiking with her family, and went missing after she started the descent ahead of them.
An investigation had been ongoing but no arrests were made.
The Atlantic Sun contacted the provincial police communications office for an update on the investigation, but they had not responded to comment by the time this edition went to print on Tuesday.
