The Bradwell Spring in Vredehoek reopened to the public on Monday following infrastructure restoration to the value of R425000.
The rehabilitation started in February and ended last month.
The water collection point at the seasonal spring was closed in November 2023 due to a low flow.
The primary goal of the restoration was to expand the spring’s water supply. The work involved decreasing the depth of the abstraction point and constructing a natural filtering system with related pipes. The asphalt was also repaired and taps fitted.
“We welcome the much-needed improvements made to restore Bradwell Spring for more residents to be able to enjoy this community benefit. The refurbishment will assist greatly in increasing the yield of spring water available as we officially reopen the facility to the public,” said the City’s Mayoral committee member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien
Bradwell Spring is located on the corner of Upper Buitenkant and Ludlow Street, near to the Yeoville Sports Field. The Water and Sanitation Directorate opened it in 2019, making it the City’s second formalised spring water collection facility after Newlands Spring.
What residents need to keep in mind about the Bradwell spring:
· The spring is seasonal, which may result in reduced water flow or pressure during summer;
· Bradwell Spring water is not treated, therefore residents use it at their own risk. The spring water is not recommended for human consumption;
· This water is not for commercial use and may not be sold. City staff monitor the site and will act on transgressions when needed.
