A
passenger train at Cape Town Station is the cause of thick black plume of smoke
rising from the city on Saturday July 21 at about 3.45pm.
The
City’s fire and rescue services spokesperson Theo Layne said emergency services
including four fire engines and two water tankers arrived on the scene and the
area around platform 15 and 16 was cordoned off. All train services were
initially stopped but resumed once firefighters had the blaze under control.
The
cause of the fire which destroyed a number of carriages is not known and no-one
was hurt.
This
is at least the fourth train to be torched in the past two months (“Burning
issue”, Southern Mail, June 20). Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA)
forensic teams have launched an investigation over the previous attacks of
arson where four people were injured and one person died.
