Childhood cancer in the spotlight

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and non-profit company Cupcakes of Hope will be hosting South Africa’s seventh National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer, on Saturday September 29.

It’s a community-driven project where Cupcake Angels “bake” a difference in the lives of children with cancer.

Cupcakes of Hope was started by Sandy Cipriano in 2012 to raise awareness of childhood cancer and funds for kids with cancer who need medical and/or financial assistance. “The only requirement to be a Cupcake Angel is that your cupcakes must be made with love,” says Ms Cipriano.

As early detection can help save a child’s life, the organisation also educates parents about the early signs of childhood cancer.

These are on an illustrated leaflet available on the Cupcakes of Hope website in more than 20 languages, including all 11 official South African languages.

To take part, visit www.cupcakesofhope.org to find your nearest participating mall.

Contact the mall co-ordinator to make your pledge of 24 or 48 cupcakes.

The public can support the cause on the day by making a R10 donation for a cupcake.
