The City is investigating the dumping of oil containers into the sea last week.
About 100 oil canisters were retrieved by the City’s Coastal Management Department officials on Thursday November 5 after the City’s Disaster Risk Management call centre was alerted to the matter by the owner of the Shell garage at Three Anchor Bay.
Marian Nieuwoud, mayoral committee member for spatial planning and environment, said the containers were empty and there was no evidence of an oil spill in the vicinity.
“We don’t know who is behind this act, or what their motive is, but we believe that they were dumped on purpose. We will use footage from CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the bay to see if we can identify those responsible,” she said.
She commended the officials for their swift response, and commitment to retrieving the containers from the bay.
“They have collected a total of 113 plastic containers. These have been removed off site for appropriate disposal,” she said.
