Families in Bo-Kaap received certificates after completing a family strengthening programme, run in the area. The eight-week programme is an initiative of the City’s department of social development and early childhood development, to build healthy relationships between parents and their children. The programmes for children included ways to deal with criticism and anger, the importance of communication, and the issues of alcohol and drugs, while the programmes for parents covered ways to manage stress, the importance of family meetings, the rewards for good behaviour and setting limits. Those involved said they understood that they were taking baby steps but were happy with the change they had made so far.
