Sea Point resident Heidi Russel is committed to environmental preservation by assisting in the eradication of invasive species along Table Mountain’s slopes.
Ms Russel, 53, began her conservation journey in 2022. She recently earned R5000 in conservation funding from Engen, for her volunteer work, which will benefit the Sugarbird Project.
“I’ve always been passionate about the environment because it’s a vital part of our lives and our future. I especially cherish places that have streams and lots of bird life and lots of indigenous plants,” Ms Russel said.
She is passionate about restoring natural habitats after seeing the destruction caused by a wildfire.
“Invasive plants spread quickly, fuel fires and consume excessive water, posing a significant threat to ecosystems. We use our hands and a popper to remove the invasive plants so we do have equipment to remove it, I do have a saw for the bigger plants as well,” says Ms Russel.
“Seeing areas restored and wildlife returning brings me immense joy, and it’s rewarding to know that my efforts, alongside those of The Sugarbird Project, is making a tangible difference,” she said.
Besides the volunteering, Ms Russel has a bokashi bin for vegetable leftovers which she drops off at Oranjezicht City Farm, and a worm bin for composting appropriate scraps.
Maya Nauman, a Sugarbird Trust committee member, says Ms Russel and Engen’s support are crucial to their objective of preserving and restoring the Cape Floral Kingdom’s unique biodiversity by eradicating invasive alien species.
“Their efforts have enabled us to extend our reach and make a significant difference in protecting the Cape Floral Kingdom. We are deeply grateful for Heidi’s dedication and Engen’s support,” said Ms Nauman.
Funded entirely by public donations, Sugarbird relies on volunteers for oversight and administration.
“By bringing together like-minded individuals, the project aims to make a significant impact in protecting the Cape Floral Kingdom,” she said.
Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI manager, says the company is committed to aiding the communities in which it operates.
“We are proud to support The Sugarbird Project and commend Heidi for her active community contribution in helping preserve our natural heritage,” said Ms Mdabula.
