A man on his Sunday morning hike on February 19, made the horrific discovery of the dead body of an unidentified hiker on Table Mountain, police confirmed.
The hiker had been reported missing by the group that he was hiking with on Saturday February 18.
Provincial police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk said the body was discovered by a man who was hiking up Platteklip Gorge.
“He immediately informed the rescue (services) and police. The man was certified as deceased and his body handed over to pathology services.
“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” said Captain Van Wyk.
It is unclear how the victim became separated from the group he had been with.
Merle Collins, spokesperson for South African National Parks (SANParks), confirmed that the deceased was a tourist.
“I can confirm that the body of a missing hiker was found on Sunday morning. The hiker was reported missing on Saturday evening by the group he was with.
“A search was launched and his body was found the next morning.”
Ms Collins could not confirm if the windy conditions had played a role in the hiker going missing.
