A gleaming black piano arrived at the Ladies Christian Home in Wandel Street, Gardens, to provide music in the main lounge where concerts and other entertainments are held, as well as the usual religious services.
Although the piano still needs some work, the inaugural concert was held on Wednesday May 24.
The donation of the piano had been arranged by Judith Gordon, who delivered a 50-minute programme with her duet partner, Margaret Cockburn.
The pieces ranged from Dances by Beethoven, Grieg, Handel and Mozkowski, to Country Gardens, Havah Nagilah and Banjo Rag, ending with tunes from The Sound of Music.
About fifty residents attended, and they continued to express their enjoyment by singing down the corridors as they left the hall.
Manager Lindsay Long said:“We really appreciate your concern for the Home and those for whom we care.”
This gesture was intended to show that the home is an important part of Cape Town’s community, and to indicate gratitude to the staff looking after the residents who in their turn served others faithfully in years gone past.
