Women from different cultures and backgrounds will come together to share their life experiences during a Women’s Day event at Den Anker restaurant, at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday August 10, from 8am to 11am.
One of six women who will share their stories is Letshego Zulu, widow of adventurer and motor racing driver Gugu Zulu, who died just before summiting Mount Kilimanjaro with the Trek 4 Mandela expedition in 2016. Her book, I Choose to Live, Life after losing Gugu, recounted the tragedy, has just been published. Joining Ms Zulu as guest speakers will be:
MasterChef finalist Abigail Mbalo-Mokoena, a dental technologist-turned-founder of the “4roomed eKasi Culture” restaurant in Khayelitsha
Designer Tamburai Chirume, co-founder of mother and daughter design collaboration One of Each focusing on luxury handbags and fashion accessories
Wellness blogger Maxine Schuiling, founder of Macro Mixes and evidence based health blogger over at Sugarfree Sundays
Artist Lizette Chirrime who will share her journey to becoming an artist who creates large-scale textile-driven works
Lavender Hill granny and social activist Connie Abrahams will share more about her Young Knitters Club, an initiative she started to help keep young people off the streets in the Cape Flats.
The event kicks off with a yoga session led by Virgin Active on the Pierhead deck, followed by breakfast at Den Anker and talks by the women. The event includes performances by the traditional women’s choir Isibane.
Tickets cost R200 and the proceeds will benefit two charities: The Justice Desk, which focuses on empowering women, and the Imbumba Foundation, which invests in education and development of the girl child.
