Oldest Lion member turns 100

Harry Myers celebrated his 100th birthday on Monday.

The oldest Lions Club member in South Africa, Harry Myers, celebrated his 100th birthday on Monday.

Mr Myers is a charter member of the Lions Club, Cape of Good Hope, situated in Plumstead.

The Cape of Good Hope members gathered with Mr Myers on Sunday at his retirement centre, Good Hope Park in Sea Point, to celebrate his birthday.

My Myers beamed as the club members spent the afternoon with him. Everyone ate cake and tea with Mr Myers and the other residents at Good Hope Park.

Mr Myers has served at the club for more than 60 years and is also a past president of the club as well as a Leo adviser.

Leo advisers work with youth in the Lions clubs, guiding them on how to help out in communities.

Charlotte Jubelin, regional chairperson of District 410W of Lions Club International, thanked Pick * Pay Wynberg for sponsoring Mr Myers’s birthday cake.

The Cape of Good Hope Lions Club is a part of Lions Clubs International.

Founded in 1917, it is best known for fighting blindness, but also volunteers for many different community projects – including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled.

The club celebrated its 60th birthday last November.

Mr Myers is losing his sight because of his age. Last year, at the birthday celebrations, he donated R5 000 towards a sight project in the club because he is so passionate about sight.

Lion president for Cape of Good Hope, Brian Moses, opened the celebration with a short prayer and well wishes from the club.

Ms Jubelin conveyed birthday greetings from the district governor Bennie Smith and from all Lion members in District 410W.

A photo of the club’s 60th anniversary and a special mug were handed to Mr Myers.

“What a beautiful soul, always cheerful, grateful, in good spirits and expressing his thanks to the Cape of Good Hope members.” said Ms Jubelin.
