Police car vandal to remain in custody

A 33-year old man has been arrested for malicious damage to state property, after damaging a police vehicle during the student protests last week.

Cape Town police arrested the man, who is employed as a general worker at a UCT residence in Observatory, in connection with vandalism of police vehicles that were parked in Buitenkant Street during the student protest on Wednesday October 26.

According to Captain Ezra October, spokesperson for Cape Town Central police station, the arrest was executed after the police received information of the whereabouts of the man whose picture was posted on the SAPS official Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The suspect was arrested at his place of employment.

He appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday October 31. The National Prosecuting Authority’s Eric Ntabazalila said he will remain in custody and appear in court again on Monday November 7 for bail information.

The police thanked the community for the information given of the suspect’s whereabouts.
