Pupil takes top trumps

Fritz Freiman came out tops in a game which tests general knowledge.

Fritz Freiman from Sea Point Primary was the winner in the Top Trumps Cape Town tournament final last week.

Top Trumps is an educational, social and competitive card game, based around a wide range of factual areas. It was invented in the UK in the 1970s, and was originally about cars but now covers everything from Snakes to Star Wars, Wonders of the World to WWE.

Over 2000 schools are taking part in the tournament in the UK currently.

For its first year in South Africa, 70 schools form Gauteng and the Western Cape registered for the tournament.

Many schools ran the tournament through their after-school programme, some in the library, and some in break time. The school champions of participating schools were entered into the regional final closest to them.

The Cape Town final was held at at Readers Warehouse Tokai on October 20 and the Johannesburg final was held on October 27.

A number of rounds were played with the finalists and overall winner selected by the end of the afternoon. Prizes were awarded to the champion and their school.
