Support places of recovery

As South Africans we are used to bad stories.

With the spectre of state capture hanging over us, we are constantly updated with new unbelievable tales of wrong.

In order to claim back our country we can do well to learn from those around us who have found renewal.

The Cape’s ongoing affair with substance abuse and addiction, tied in with gangsterism and unemployment makes for a society where the odds are stacked for the
worse.

It is for this reason that the people and places that provide the means for recovery should be exalted.

The work of these centres of safety provide direction where government so often fails.

They offer the security and support that many of us take for granted.

I was recently reminded of the value of these havens by former Premier Helen Zille who spoke at an event celebrating 20 years of service of the Salt River-based, Loaves and Fishes.

While we continue to suffer the pestilence of vice, so too we are emboldened by the remarkable resilience and resolve in this fairest of Capes.

As we determine South Africa’s way forward, we can take from Loaves and Fishes, a place of renewal, not a shelter. And while we take we should remember to give.

These places often need our help to continue their valuable work.
