Norma Kariem, Gardens
Many residents of the Kloofnek Road – Eaton Road area are mourning the death of a much loved car guard, who died on November 16 in a street somewhere in this vicinity.
He was known only as Chico. No surname. Background unknown and no information about how he landed up in Cape Town.
The only speculative information available is that he spoke Portuguese and most probably came from Mozambique.
It wasn’t easy to guess that English wasn’t his mother tongue because his use of the English language was good and polite.
News of Chico’s death spread like wildfire and was met with shock and disbelief by the residents. One of the residents summed it up well when she said he was pure of heart, very humble and one who campaigned for justice even if it was in a Robin Hood manner. The superhero always looking after those who cared about him.
Chico’s passing has left a void that will not be easily filled but he will be remembered by the residents of this area for a long time.
Rest in peace, Chico.
