Four local artists will pay tribute to the late American musician Sixto Rodriguez on Sunday March 3 at Bokeh Creative Studios in Regent Road, Sea Point, at 6pm.
Singer and guitarist James Kibby, 62, of Sea Point, keyboardist Roy Kassel, 60, of Milnerton, and the Flip Squad band pair, singer and guitarist Dave Berman, 65, of Sea Point, and Rudi du Toit, 40, of Green Point on electric guitar will keep the legend’s music alive with their tribute titled: Rodriguez: The Man, The Music.
“We are not a band, two of the guys belong to other bands but we came together because of our shared love for Rodriguez. It started off as a show for a friend at his home and people enjoyed it and said it should be done as a show. I thought about it and I knew I could not do this alone so I reached out to musicians via Facebook, and here we are, that’s how this tribute show came about,” Mr Kibby said.
Last year the quartet did three shows and after the Sea Point gig they have another five lined up.
“It’s not a scripted show and you will hear our stories about Rodriguez’s influence on us, as individuals, and what his music means to us, so it’s an intimate and engaging experience, or so we’ve been told,” he added.
Rodriguez’s hallmark song, Sugar Man, appeared on his debut album, Cold Fact, in 1970. While he had minimal success in America, his music became extremely popular in South Africa where he has performed multiple times.
Tickets cost R120 through Quicket or at the door.
Further shows are planned for the Karoo Saloon on March 9 and 10, Cottage Club in Fish Hoek on March 23, Woodstock brewery on April 20 and the Commons in Muizenberg on April 21.
