The wind players who will take part in one of Mozart’s well-loved wind compositions, Mozart’s Serenade for Thirteen Winds (the “Gran Partita”) which will be performed on Wednesday March 16 at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Somerset Road, Green Point, at 8pm. The Serenade will be conducted by Matthew Reid, the organiser of the St Andrews Concerts Series, and the musicians are all professionals, some from the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Also on the programme is Gounod’s Petite Symphonie, a nonet (a nine-piece ensemble) for woodwinds. Gounod was the famous composer of the opera Faust, who responded to a request by famous flautist and composer Paul Taffanel to write works which showed off woodwind instruments.
