Zahid Badroodien, mayoral committee member for water and sanitation
The City is grateful to Mark Jackson for his ongoing engagement (“Serious concerns remain over sewage treatment,” Atlantic Sun letters, June 20). We understand that he is sceptical about the City’s commitment to invest in improving the technology to treat the 5% of wastewater being discharged into the ocean.
However, we emphasise that we remain committed to identifying the most viable options available to us as proposed in our marine outfall scoping study (available online).
All information in this document remains conceptual and must still undergo significant public participation processes.
Our commitment is reflected in the already budgeted R100 million in the upcoming financial year. The upgrade cost of R140 million is an estimated total (the R100 million was a very early estimate). This is subject to change as the tender documents are drawn up and a detailed engineers’ estimate prepared.
We encourage Mr Jackson to allow the experts to conduct their business. The City will remain transparent on all developments linked to our marine outfalls, and we look forward to seeing him at our next community meeting.
