At just 11 years old, Sunningdale Primary School pupil Dylan Wiggill is making waves in BMX racing, making his mark among his fellow riders by achieving another feat – securing the third spot in the BMX SA Championships held in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this month.
For Dylan, the love for riding began at an incredibly early age. Even when he could barely walk, the YBIKE Pewi became his trusted companion, carrying his passion for biking.
“From as young as 20 months old, we frequented the slopes of Table Mountain most weekends, where he used to alternate riding and walking on our hikes,” recalls his mother, Tamsyn Wiggill.
The SA Champs bring together the nation’s top BMX riders, all vying for the prize of being the best in South Africa.
The competition was intense, a nail-biting race that tested the skills of the riders.
Dylan competed in the 12 Expert age group, with 13 other talented competitors and his focus shone through. He rode strategically, handling each twist and turn with skill.
When the dust settled, he found himself just two points behind the leader, earning him a well-deserved third place in South Africa.
His mother says he’s always had a fascination with speed and for being in the air – the bigger the jumps, the more he thrives. It was a family friend, George, also a local from Sunningdale, who suggested that Dylan try his hand at BMX racing three years ago. It was a decision that the family jumped on without much hesitation.
Dylan is an active member of his local BMX club at Zone 7, and can be found at the club working on his BMX skills on most weekends.
