The Milnerton Volleyball Club organised and hosted an Open Volleyball tournament this past weekend, attracting teams from various regions of the province.
The event, part of a fundraising initiative initiated by Milnerton’s chairman, Dino Nair, who also serves on the Western Cape Volleyball executive committee, aimed to support volleyball teams and clubs across the province. These teams often rely on self-funding and constantly seek financial assistance to cover expenses such as playing equipment, venue hire fees, and kits.
The tournament featured both male and female categories, with teams drawn into groups for a round-robin phase before progressing to a knockout stage.
Teams included Jaguars Volleyball Club and Eagles Volleyball Club, making the journey from Paarl and the West Coast, respectively. The Cape Metro was well represented, featuring prominent teams such as UWC and Mitchell’s Plain, boasting provincial and national players.
“I am very pleased with the turnout and also proud we were able to run a successful event with so many teams on a single court,” said Nair.
He also commended the high standard of volleyball displayed throughout the tournament, noting it as the best he has witnessed in Cape Town over the past year and a half.
