SK Walmer came agonisingly close to securing their second win of the current Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) Super League A season when they hosted second-placed Union-Milnerton (Uni-Mil) in Green Point a week ago.
The final score was a narrow 26-22 in favour of Uni-Mil.
The Bo-Kaap-based outfit had no game at the weekend and will take on Durbanville-Bellville (Durbell) this coming Saturday, looking to continue the momentum.
Having been promoted from Super League B last season, Walmer are now battling to avoid relegation.
They currently sit in 14th place with eight points after seven games. This position leaves them in the relegation zone, as two sides will be axed from the division, and the team sitting in 13th place will go to the relegation play-offs.
Above SK Walmer in the standings are Kuils River and NTK, who have nine and 11 points, respectively. To survive the drop, SK Walmer need to move above these two teams.
With only half of their games played, Walmer remain hopeful that they can string together a few positive results in the remaining half of their fixtures.
Their close match against the high-flying Uni-Mil, resulting in such a tight scoreline, demonstrates their potential.
Adding to their motivation is the fact that the two sides immediately above them in the standings, Kuils River and NTK, have each played three more games.
Their solitary win so far came against fellow relegation-threatened Kuils River earlier in the season.
Walmer will need to be at their best when they visit the tricky Durbell side, who have only tasted defeat twice in their 10 games and are in the running for league honours.
However, SK Walmer can take confidence from their near-miss against Uni-Mil and use it as a springboard to push for more wins.
