The Cape Town Society of Model and Experimental Engineers (CTSMEE) will hold open days on Saturday and Sunday November 17 and 18 at its clubhouse, on the corner of Erin, Duke and Campground roads in Croquet Lane behind the Rondebosch Croquet Club, from 9am to 4pm.
You will be able to learn more about what the club does, interact with members and find out how to get started in the hobby of making models.
The club has a fully equipped workshop with lathes, shapers and milling machines. They also have two qualified machinists and a fitter and turner who are willing to teach new members the trade.
There will be rides for the children on the 5-inch gauge live steam engine, from 9am to noon and then from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. The break allows for maintenance. Rides are R5 each.
A club member will demonstrate how to cast toy soldiers and cannons. A number of railway layouts will be operational and there will also be a display of steam models running on compressed air.
The club’s surplus magazines and books, Bestoys model cars, model railway equipment and South African railway memorabilia, model trains sets for beginners, an refreshments will be on sale. Entry is R5 for children and R20 for adults. Children under 5 enter free.
