After six months the fence around the Bo-Kaap multi-sports courts has been fixed.
The fence was damaged during a storm in September.
The Wectec facility, as it is known among residents, suffered structural damage when the roofs of the flats opposite it were pulled off, damaging the fence (“Roofs blown off Bo-Kaap flats”, September 28, 2023).
Last year the Atlantic Sun also reported on the frustration caused by the damaged fence with Bo-Kaap Handball Club having to play their home fixtures at a different location (“Sports courts to be repaired by December”, October 19, 2023) and
Patricia van der Ross, the Mayoral committee member for community services and health, promised that the fence would be repaired by December 2023.
Ward 77 councillor Francine Higham posted on her Facebook page last Friday, March 8: “I’m happy to announce that repairs to the fence are in progress and the facility should be available to use by the end of next week, I want to thank everyone for their patience.”
Gakeem Staggie, manager of Bo-Kaap Handball Club, said they are looking forward to playing on their home turf.
“Our players won’t have to worry about getting hurt by a broken fence, so I’m happy that this is being fixed,” Mr Staggie said.
He said he last checked the facility on Monday night and confirmed that there was construction happening at the courts.
“We will resume our training after the month of Ramadaan and I’m sure by then it will be fixed. Not having a home ground really cost us as we had to play away so this (fixing the fence) is long overdue,” he said.
