As lockdown restrictions are relaxed and the number of hikers on the mountain increases, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company is running a weekend service to ensure hikers can make it safely down the mountain from its top station.
All SANParks’ national parks were reopened on June 1 in accordance with the Alert Level 3 regulations, and in response to the increased number of hikers accessing Table Mountain National Park and the closure of Lion’s Head, the TMACC launched its weekend service which will operate on Saturdays and Sundays only between 8am and 3pm.
It operates from the top of the mountain downwards only under very strict Covid-19 health regulations and the TMACC emphasised that this is a service for hikers only, to get them down from the top of the mountain, safely.
“In accordance with our strict Covid-19 health and safety protocols, we are only allowing a maximum of 26 people plus the cabin master per ride down in the cable car,” said TMACC managing director Wahida Parker.
“No person will be permitted to enter the cable car without a mask. To ensure the safety of hikers and our team, we will also sanitise the cable car after every ride,” she said.
Ms Parker has urged hikers to always take extra care when hiking up the mountain, especially during winter, and to be vigilant about the fast-changing nature of weather conditions.
“Hikers are urged not to hike alone, to dress warmly, carry water and save contact details for emergency services on their phone before embarking on their hike.”
The lower station kiosk will be open to hikers in accordance with level 3 regulations to purchase water and light refreshments, as will the rest rooms. Tickets can be bought online or in the Wi-Fi lounge at the top station.
