Milton Beach in Sea Point has been proclaimed as a dog-friendly beach.
This comes after an urgent motion from Ward 54 councillor Shayne Ramsay at Sub-council 16 in August.
In August last year a resident had approached Ms Ramsay and requested that the seldom-used beach be designated dog-friendly and that the animals be allowed to run off-leash. Sub-council resolved that Ms Ramsay embark on a public participation process and at the next public meeting the council would take a decision. Most residents supported the idea and others expressed concerns about cleaning up after the dogs.
On Monday September 17, the sub-council announced that the dogs would be allowed to run leash-free on Milton Beach. However, while dogs can run free at any time during winter, this would only be allowed before 9am and after 6pm from November to March.
This rule, according to Ms Ramsay also applies to other beaches like Camps Bay Beach. Owners are expected to be responsible for their dogs at all times and must pick up after them.
