Four men who robbed the Telkom shop in Sea Point last Wednesday were apprehended by law enforcement officers on patrol who spotted that the getaway car had been reported hijacked.
The men were handed over to SAPS for arrest before appearing in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
“Law Enforcement were outstanding in the arrest of four suspects involved in an armed robbery at the Telkom shop in Sea Point,” said ward 54 councillor Nicola Jowell.
“The officers had been on routine patrols in the area when they noticed a vehicle that had been reported as hijacked. This vehicle was then followed and through coordination was pulled over by the officers. All suspects were arrested on the scene.”
According to SAPS, the perpetrators’ vehicle was hijacked in Philippi earlier that day.
“After searching the vehicle two imitation firearms were found as well as cellphones that had been placed in a bag during the robbery at Telkom offices. A total of 28 cellphones were recovered of which three are from the staff inside Telkom,” said Sea Point SAPS Captain Cyril Dicks.
“The suspects have been charged with a number of serious crimes including hijacking, armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and more,” said Ms Jowell.
“This arrest in the middle of suburban Sea Point on a busy road could have been very different. Law enforcement acted with the utmost professionalism to secure the arrest, safely detain the suspects and to hand the scene over to SAPS for processing. Well done to everyone involved.”
