The Veterans Cricket Association of South Africa took the decision to cancel the tournament. The Over-50s Cricket World Cup tournament is the first such event to appear on the South African sporting calendar.
It was sad news for the cricketers who have been training for a number of months and those who travelled from abroad to participate in this event.
Some of the matches were scheduled to be hosted at Claremont Cricket, Rondebosch, Western Province, Green Point, Cape Town and Langa cricket clubs.
Seven of the 11 visiting teams have been staying in the same Cape Town hotel where appropriate precautions have been taken and they will remain there until arrangements can be made for their return home.
“It is the right call for the benefit of all South Africans that we reduce the possibility of spreading the virus, that is why this tournament had to be cancelled,” said Cobus Bedeker, who spoke on behalf of the sponsors.
