Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), which has been combating dangerous wildfires in Cape Town since 1999, is looking for volunteers.
VWS has approximately 220 members at four stations (Newlands, Jonkershoek, South Peninsula and a newly developing one in Grabouw).
The non-profit organisation is managed and run completely by volunteers – no members or management are paid for the work they do.
Since its inception VWS has assisted Table Mountain National Park, CapeNature, Overberg District Municipality and Winelands District Municipality with some of the wildest fires in the Western Cape.
VWS is on stand-by to respond to wildfires 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Most VWS volunteers have day jobs, some are students, some are retired, others run their own companies but all are dedicated, motivated and highly trained to ensure the ultimate goal of wildfire suppression. To date VWS members have completed more than 56 000 active fire-fighting hours.
Training for volunteers starts in April and recruitment information sessions for VWS South Peninsula will be held at Monkey Valley Resort, Noordhoek, on Wednesday March 30, at 7pm, and at Calders Hotel and Conference Centre, Fish Hoek, on Sunday April 3, at 9am; sessions for VWS Newlands will be beld at Newlands Fire Base on Thursday March 31, at 6.30pm, on Saturday April 2, at 9am, and on Tuesday April 19, at 6.30pm; VWS Jonkershoek will have info sessions at Helderberg Nature Reserve, Helderberg (to be confirmed) on Wednesdays March 30, at 7pm, at Stellenbosch University (to be confirmed) on April 6, at 7pm, and Tygerberg Nature Reserve, Tygerberg, on April 13, at 7pm, while VWS Grabouw will have an information session at Nuwerberg Nature Reserve, Grabouw, on Wednesday March 30, at 7pm.
