A provincial championship boxing showcase will take place at the Hope Street Hall in Gardens on Friday May 26.
It will be headlined by Khayelitsha’s Zumbonge Nocele and Mossel Bay’s Mbulelo Gubula, as well as Kuils River’s Jamie Webb and Lower Crossroads’ Aphiwe Myoyo.
Nocele and Gubula will be vying for the flyweight title over 10 rounds. Webb and Myoyo will be battling it out for the junior middleweight title over 10 rounds.
The Maxim Boxing Promotions event has 12 professional bouts. Nocele’s younger sibling, Asheko Nocele will be fighting against Loyiso Lothango in a four-round bout. The bouts will feature a four-round heavyweight fight between Jose Kadima and Veron Bella Mbembo.
Philippi’s prodigy, Asavela Peter will kick-off the proceedings against Luthando Makubalo over a four-round mini flyweight bout.
Brice Boxing Academy’s Matthew Geldenhuys said last month that he will stop his opponent Kudzai Mungwariri before the fourth round bell in their middleweight clash.
Reigning SA amateur champion, Okuhle Mthi, from 9SAI Boxing Club in Khayelitsha said her camp will make sure to bring the fireworks when she takes on Zizo Skoli in a four-round flyweight bout.
Promoter and owner at Kings Boxing Gym in Woodstock, Allen Chizungu said when the fighters step into the ring, they put it all on the line, leaving behind blood, sweat and on many occasions, tears.
“Boxing is coming back to the province and we need as much support as we can get. We would love to thank each community for supporting their boxers. We have 12 professional bouts that will take place on Friday. Fighters come from Khayelitsha, Hanover Park, Mitchell’s Plain, Delft and all over the province,” he said.
Over the years, the Western Cape has produced remarkable fighting talent. From the iconic boxing legend, Mike Bernardo, from Fish Hoek, to Khayelitsha’s Mzuvukile Magwaca and Mzonke Fana. These fighters left an indelible mark on the sporting landscape, inspiring the next generation of champions.
“This is going to be one of the best events in the Western Cape. We have the best from every township. All their best boxers are going to be on stage. It’s going to be difficult to predict a winner because of the hard work, skill and intensity of the boxers,” said Chizungu.
